Pop goes Salinger

Geletterde pop is deze week volledig gewijd aan JD Salinger. De Schotse band Belle and Sebastian was een grote fan. Le Pastie de la Bourgeoisie -- van de EP '3.. 6.. 9 Seconds of Light' -- verwijst naar het lievelingsboek van de zanger: : "Wouldn't you like to get away?, give yourself to the allure of Catcher in the Rye, the future's swathed in Stars and Stripes" (clip) Andere popgroepen die naar het werk van Salinger refereren zijn Over the Rhine met de single "Circle of Quiet": 'Like the Catcher / In the Rye / I wanna stay / Where you are'.

De song "Catcher" van de Zweede groep Komeda gaat over Holden Caufield: " Who will catch your fall? / Who will do it all? and There ain't no catcher in the rye." The Bloodhound Gang hebben het in "Magna Cum Nada" ook over de beroemde antiheld: "Why try, I'm that guy, Holden Caufield, from Catcher in the Rye. Put away cause he wasn't all there, like a jigsaw puzzle you might compare, me to him." Ook de punkrockers van Green Day doen hun duit in het zakje met "Who Wrote Holden Caulfield?" Salinger's boek werd ook door Billy Joel aangehaald in zijn single We Didn't Start The Fire uit 1989: "Brando, The King and I, and The Catcher in the Rye".  Last but not least: Guns 'n Roses hebben op hun laastste album 'Chinese Democracy' een song getiteld  "Catcher in the Rye".  Meer songverwijzingen vind je op WikiAnswers.
