Europees Public Domain Charter

Op 14 april 2010 publiceerde de Europeana Foundation - beheerder van Europeana - het 'Public Domain Charter'. Hiermee ondersteunt Europeana het belang van het publieke domein op het internet. Met dit Charter sluit Europeana zich aan bij de brede beweging die het publieke domein promoot in al zijn aspecten, vanuit de positie van de 'content houders'. Het Charter werd opgesteld in nauwe samenwerking met Communia, een Europees project dat werkt rond het concept 'publiek domein'.

Kernpunten:

-Europeana belongs to the public and must represent the public interest.
-The Public Domain is the material from which society creates cultural understanding and knowledge. Having a thriving Public Domain is essential to economic and social well-being.
-Digitisation of Public Domain content does not create new rights over it. Works that are in the Public Domain in analogue form continue to be in the Public Domain once they have been digitised.
