You Are Not A Gadget

In tijden van onmisbaar geworden smartphones en de toenemende dictatuur van de snelle mediahap is ' You Are Not a Gadget' van Jaron Lanier welgekomen lectuur. Zijn manifesto biedt een kritische kijk op het vaak eenzijdige gebruik van het internet: “I fear that we are beginning to design ourselves to suit digital models of us, and I worry about a leaching of emphaty and humanity in that process," merkt hij in dat verband op. Ook zoekt hij naar oplossingen  voor de onbedoelde gevolgen van de web 2.0 cultuur voor musici, beeldende kunstenaars, schrijvers en andere professionele creatieve beroepen: "Pop culture has entered into a nostalgic malaise. Online culture is dominated by trivial mashups of the culture that existed before the onset of mashups, and by fandom responding to the dwindling outposts of centralized mass media. It is a culture of reaction without action." En nu is het hoog tijd om mijn smartphone op te laden.
